ENSEMBLE "TAÑEDORES"
In the program "Pues, Juan, tañe"
The current program features dance compositions by two Spanish
baroque guitar virtuosi: Gaspar Sanz and Santiago de Murcia. The
growing popularity of the guitar during 17th century let to a demand
for high quality compositions. This resulted in some of the finest
music ever written for the instrument. A large part of this
repertoire consists of variations on standard progressions. (As we
know from historical descriptions, even children in Madrid took part
in improvisatory music sessions wherein various instruments were
played: guitars, lutes, flutes, castanets and other percussion
instruments.) One can easily imagine that these compositions were
the result of the improvisational practices of the day. In this
program we try to recreate this atmosphere of spontaneous music
making.
